This is a brilliant line-up for a short 8 day route. We didn't travel more than 60 km a day, which made for a happy toddler. Every town we visited had a playground, even Allihies (a two pub town!). Although we had a headwind and a few rainy days, it was still brilliant. It was chilly enough to suggest not going earlier than May, although we had it on good word that it was unseasonable weather when we were passing through. CENTER>

May 2011

Day 1: I had some wheel trouble the first day, with a blown tire between Maynooth & Heuston station (a 30 km spin), followed by a blow on the same tire just after arriving in Cork! Got a new tire at a shop in Cork city, and had no troubles getting to Blarney.

Day 2: Had a beautiful days ride along some undulating terrain into Inchigeelah. A bit of highway riding was necessary, but it was the only time during the whole trip that we saw more than 2 vehicles back to back!

Day 3: An amazing day! But we paid for it... Emillie was close to breaking, as the roads were horridly slow and we had gale force headwinds (> 90km/h). The countryside was pristine though, and our 'shortcut' to Glengarriff was well worth it.

Day 4: Allihies was simply pretty. Colorful cottages on a hill, with colorful pubs and colorful hills. The hills were still around, but not as painful as the first day on account of the ashphault roads. Having a beach at the end of the day was a nice touch too.

Day 5: To make up for the headwind of the last two days, we were given a steady tailwind. Much to the chagrin of the Ras contenders... we made way (the Gardai made sure of that).

Day 6: Some wind, but the Southern hills of Kerry gave good shelter. You could tell we were in the tourist area now...

Day 7: Windy and cloudy all day. Many nice stops along the way, but we skipped them all except for Valentia Island near Cahersiveen (recommended trip via the 2Euro ferry).

Day 8: A last push along with a light tailwind for our last day. Very pleasant ride up until we hit Killorglin (which was a nice town), where we had to join the M72 into Kilarney (heavy traffic).
